When you finally make the choice to give up your chemical dependency, you need to find other things to occupy your time. This can be a challenge, since you are trying to rebuild your life. However, one of the simplest things you can do is to take up some exercise. There are a lot of different kinds of exercise out there, so you are sure to find one you like. Keep reading to find out some things you can do to help yourself get fit and stay healthy.

First, find the best pre workout supplement. Nutritional supplements can really boost your exercise performance. You’ll find that most of them are very healthy, so you simply need to determine which would best help you. This is done by seeing your doctor and examining your options. With a good supplement, you will be able to exercise for a bit longer and make the most of the workouts you choose.

Do an exercise you enjoy. Many people head right to the gym, but that can be a mistake. If you have no interest in lifting weights, you are going to be less likely to hang out there and to return time after time.

Quite often the argument for why many men and women don’t want to do what is necessary for their health is that they fear the embarrassment of judgment for mental or physical alterations their bodies have undergone as a result of their own actions. This is particularly common among those who have made the first decision to ingest amphetamines and alcohol but treatment centers across the United States are equipped with the research, techniques and an understanding, professional staff that is fully aware of the many manifestations of substance abuse. They look out for the health of the mind and body of a patient. The longer he or she goes without proper detox and drug rehabilitation, the more the substance will rob their lives of healthy relationships, comforts and safety. They heighten their risks of legal, financial and health dangers that could take everything away from them in an instant. But there are thousands of treatment centers in the United States alone.

There are several types of treatment centers. There are many program options, so one program isn’t made for everyone, but all programs begin with detoxification. Some facilities specialize in the cleansing stage, which is an inpatient, medical detox to help patients overcome their fear and the physical repercussions of withdraw from substances. The typical patient going into treatment for the first time sees drug and alcohol detox as sickness, delirium, sweating and tremors for hours and even days. Drugs and alcohol act upon the brain chemistry and therefore creates the dependency. No one should ever risk this detox phase unsupervised because of how serious the illness can become. But many men and women feel shame that is associated with how drugs and alcohol has left them so weak and ill.

But, it is a significant part of any professional treatment centers that like the National Association of alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors’ clearly state in their Code of Conduct that each counselor must maintain confidentiality of their patient’s identifying information, condition and details of their treatment. Patients in drug and alcohol treatment centers are concerned about not only their privacy but their level of comfort with the staff therein. So it is critical that each patient and their family members or medical professionals recommending additional care point him or her in the direction of the best rehabilitation facility for them. After care is just as significant as detox as is the length of treatment received; the services received affect the success of the addiction management routine for the patient’s interest.

When it comes to providing information on the multitude of rehab centers across the country, the first step is to explore the reasoning for their existence – addiction. Whether the substance is deemed to be the root or the result of the original addiction, patients have their own way of displaying the habitual behaviors in most, if not all, areas of their lives.

Addiction impacts quality of life because the patient is forced to make changes and allowances in order to continue the abuse of the substance in order to achieve the pleasure they’ve begun to associate with it. Most patients who seek the intervention of drug rehab centers have realized that outside of the immediate release during the use of the substance the rest of their lives have become rather bleak if not disastrous/hazardous to themselves and others. So, much like professional psychological assistance with recognized mental illness, these men and women have to seek the best rehabilitation for their specific addiction and behavior patterns. In addiction rehabilitation, there are several different treatment types, including:

Inpatient and outpatient facilities

12 step programs

Behavioral therapy treatments

There are also programs that see a patient’s addiction manifestation (the drug) as an illness and treat it as such.

Since the inception and use of drug rehab centers, professional psychologist, psychiatrists, medical professionals, and addiction specialists have been working diligently to determine the most ideal combination of medication and physical therapy techniques in order to bring forth the most significant success rates. And combination treatment accompanied by extended time in rehabilitation seems to be the most repeated successful option for long-term management.

Treatment facilities offer 30, 60, and 90-day programs as well as long-term programs that can last up to 1 year. And a few of the main types of treatments are 12 steps, methadone maintenance, outpatient care, inpatient short-term and inpatient long-term care in residential programs. But the basic ideologies of an effectual drug rehab centers lie in its recognition of the drug’s effect on the patient’s brain, compulsions, and behavior if the patient isn’t already dealing with mental illness. Also, it must possess a foundation of addressing the needs of the patient, a balance of medication and counseling, continuous monitoring, and making sure the patient utilizing treatment for an adequate amount of time so that they grasp the principles that are most effective for him or her, for a lifetime of success.

Oxycontin addiction can be devastating for women, especially women who feel that they are on guard about substance abuse. There are many avenues for a woman to become addicted to prescription drugs. Some women take prescription drugs after surgery or after an injury and become dependent upon them. Other women begin taking prescription drugs in place of other illegal substances to get the same high. Still other women casually use prescription drugs at the instance of a friend or loved one that was helped by the pain medication. Although Oxycontin is only legally available through a physician, many, many women find ways to obtain the drug without the knowledge of their primary care doctor.

OxyContin Addiction & Women
Oxycontin addiction affects so many women because the drug is easily available either through legal or illegal means. Legally, the drug is regularly prescribed, even for minor injuries or surgery, by healthcare professionals who want to ease their patient’s pain and suffering. Illegally, OxyContin pills are sold on the street, sometimes for more than $40 a pill.

Unfortunately, OxyContin addiction is growing not only from women who suffer from substance abuse, but also as a drug of choice for women attempting to take their own life. A report release by SAMHSA in 2011, indicated a 210% increase in suicide attempts by women using Oxycontin. Women who attempted suicide using Vicodin, another commonly abused prescription drug, rose 67%.

Women who become pregnant while suffering from OxyContin addiction have special concerns as the drug does get passed to the baby. Pregnancy affects a women’s lifestyle and habits, and many women find that they need to change their lifestyle to protect their baby en utero. Many physicians will ask questions about a woman’s lifestyle during prenatal visits, a woman should answer these questions openly and honestly, even if she is suffering from substance abuse or alcoholism.

Coping As A Woman
Women who suffer from Oxycontin addiction may not even recognize the signs and symptoms of their addiction. They may realize that they are using the drug frequently, but may have difficulty admitting how frequently or through what means they are getting the drug. OxyContin addiction, like other addictions, can cause women do to things they wouldn’t normally do and engage in behaviors that they would otherwise feel are inappropriate.

Women suffering from OxyContin addiction during pregnancy can enter a rehab program and start a path to recovery before they give birth. Rehab during pregnancy is no more difficult or challenging while pregnant, and is always the best thing to do for a baby’s health. Women suffering from addiction often find that a women’s specific treatment facility is the best way for them to get the help that they need to overcome their chemical dependency and get on the right track. OxyContin addiction is often found alongside other women’s health issues like anxiety, depression or eating disorders. Women’s drug rehab facilities that focus on treating women’s health instead of just “health” are better equipped to handle these kinds of situations and are more likely to have group counseling sessions aimed at the emotional concerns of women.

Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome is a debilitating condition that affects drug addicts and alcoholics in recovery. In fact, the symptoms of PAWS are widely considered to be the leading cause of relapse – especially in people who have been clean for several months or more. Understanding this condition is a critical part of mitigating the dangerous public health concern that is drug addiction and alcoholism.

Post acute withdrawal isn’t a topic of particular interest in the addiction sciences at the moment; however, the condition has already developed a number of different names. These include the common acronym of PAWS, as well as Protracted Withdrawal, Post Withdrawal, Post-Acute Withdrawal and others.

What is PAWS?

PAWS symptoms generally set in after an addict or alcoholic has ceased using and gone through the physiological process of withdrawal and AWS or Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. AWS lasts anywhere from several days after the last use of drugs or alcohol, and can continue for up to 3 weeks in some rare cases. In general acute withdrawal symptoms subside after 7-10 days, after which time post acute withdrawal sets in.

Theory

Humans have an evolutionary trait that at one time ensured our survival, while today often backfires in the form of various addictions. This trait consists of a reward system whereby the brain releases “feel good” chemicals when a person does something that can ensure their survival; eating, sex, finding warm shelter, etc. As these chemicals are released the brain creates contextual reference points that serve to reinforce the “survival” behavior via a literal compulsion in the person to seek out those contextual associations.

Unfortunately, using drugs and/or alcohol mimics this process, leading to addiction when the user is compelled to recreate those events or feelings again and again. These behavioral processes are neurological in nature and are permanent. This means that even after a person has stopped using, neurological pathways in the brain continue to exist that constantly seek to recreate the “good feelings.”

Post acute withdrawal essentially refers to the symptoms and behavioral changes and compulsions related to these neurological pathways. In lay terms, the user is still going through withdrawal, but the symptoms are no longer considered to be “acute.”

Symptoms

Protracted Withdrawal symptoms are different for everyone. They can include: headaches, nausea, exhaustion, restlessness, night sweats, difficulty formulating and expressing thoughts, feelings of inadequacy and isolation, depression, mania, anger and rage, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, poor physical coordination (sometimes referred to as Dry Drunk), inability to solve simple problems, short and long-term memory loss, and many other types of symptoms.

Some people may only experience one or two of these symptoms, while others may experience many of them. This is partly dependent on attitude, physical fitness, mental acuity and a number of other factors.

Duration

Some people in recovery indicate that they’ve never had any signs of PAWS, while others state that they’ve had symptoms for years at a time. In general, the more severe a person’s drug use, the longer the duration of active drug addiction and the higher the frequency of relapse, the more likely it is that symptoms of post withdrawal will continue for months or even years, and the more likely it is that those symptoms will remain consistent.

Staging an intervention for a loved one or friend can be very stressful and present many challenges. Many times, people know they want to do something but feel helpless and confused about how they can help. An intervention can be just what an addict needs to get them on the road to recovery. While there is no sure way to know if your intervention will achieve your desired results, using every tool available to prepare will increase the chances you will have a successful intervention and begin to make a difference in the addicts life. Here are five tips that you can use to guide you through this very difficult event.

Focusing your intervention efforts in on well-defined goals will help you prepare and also keep your group focused during the intervention. Simply confronting someone and telling them you do not like their behavior is usually not enough to change the path of an addict. You need to research treatment options before you begin an intervention so that you can give your friend or family member options and take immediate action if they agree to the terms you lay out during the intervention. You can even make all the arrangements so that if they agree to enter treatment it can start that very day.

Having multiple people at an intervention is important. An addict will need to see that multiple people who truly care about them are concerned for their well-being. The people you choose to include in the intervention should be very close friends, family members, and anyone you think the addict may listen too. It is important to ensure that you do not include people who have been enabling the addict in any way in the intervention because they could undermine the group’s efforts. You may also want to consider the temperament of the people whom you invite to take part. Yelling and accusing the addict will not help in any way.

Just as important as who you invite is the place and time you plan the intervention. Try to choose a time when the addict will not be distracted by other things. If they are still working a job, make sure you do not stop them when they are on their way to work however, sometimes the early in the day the better. Many addicts, especially alcoholics start drinking mid-morning so if you can catch them before that time you may have the opportunity to talk to them when they are sober. Having the intervention in a private location is also important. This is a private matter that should not take place in a restaurant.

Keep the tone of the intervention as calm as possible. Start by describing how you have been feeling when you have encountered the warning signs that have led you to believe the intervention is necessary. Having a few people express what they have experienced will open up the dialogue instead of making the addict feel attacked or ganged up on.

The best way to achieve all of these goals is to plan ahead. Talk with everyone involved about what should be said and who is going to say what. Have the event organized complete with all the information about treatment centers and other help available with you for the intervention. Sometimes planning a mock intervention before the actual day and running through how it will go will help everyone feel more comfortable and remain calm when the time comes.

Addiction is as old, if not older, as the trade of prostitution. There has never been a time in the history of our civilization that this affliction been more pervasive than in our present society. The object of addiction has gone far beyond drugs and alcohol. Practically anything that causes our brains to evoke its natural chemicals which results to altered states, usually pleasurable feelings, has potentials to get us “hooked.” From hamburgers to sex to surfing the Internet, all activities that get us habituated to instant pleasure. With the advent of high technology everything seems to come in an “instant,” such as instant mail, instant coffee, quick shopping via the internet or bidding in an e-bay auction, or instant answer to questions. Modern life offers us instant gratification in almost anything.

It is this immediate gratification in everyday life that seems to have shaped our expectations about how life should be. This mind-set is so pervasive that we expect immediate results even for things that normally require time to bear fruit. This habit of mind makes us vulnerable to all forms of addictive behaviors. What makes us repeat behavior is the promise of pleasurable outcomes. When the connection between behavior and pleasurable outcome is instantaneous we tend to repeat the behavior; often, without regard to other unpleasant longer-term consequences. Our brain is wired this way. We respond to positive rewards better than negative or punitive ones. The brain’s reward system is mediated by chemicals in our brain like light switch that turns on and off depending on what is presented to our senses. Indeed, we are creatures of habit, especially pleasant ones.

The most devastating form of addiction is addiction to drugs and other substances. It is so compelling because it holds the brain totally captive, and in turn the rest of the addict’s life is held hostage by it. It is this complex mechanism of addiction that makes its manifestations difficult to comprehend by the layman. What we normally see is the person making the choice to indulge in drugs or alcohol and the consequent psychological, medical, and social costs of over-indulgence to the person, and to some extent to his or her family and loved ones as well. For many, it is not easy to comprehend why addiction is a disease, especially when the individual has chosen to indulge in them in the first place. While it is easy to view a cancer patient a victim of misfortune, it is difficult to ascribe the same to what befalls an alcoholic or an addicted person. A person is often not seen as a victim when he or she suffers from a condition that is perceived to have been self-inflicted.

It is this perception of self-inflicted problem that presents difficulty for many to empathize and be sympathetic to the addicted person. Unfortunately, in the case of addiction, the initial use of substances for whatever reason, e.g., to satisfy curiosity, peer pressure, recreational activity, etc., may lead to eventual problematic use depending on the level of personal risk-factors that a person may have. For example, casual use may actually open a Pandora’s Box for individuals with a genetic predisposition to addiction. Once the cycle of addiction begins, the rest is beyond the person’s control. When substance use leads to compelling abuse despite adverse consequences, addiction has set in. At this point, the person is now under the clutches of a disease called addiction. The addicted person who is caught in the web of addiction is often impervious to change, despite drastic decline in personal health and other spheres of life. It is easy for society to view the addicted person as a hopeless case given the person’s repeated failure to give up the drug.

In addition, many of them featured the complicated terminology of insurances to lure people into buying their products but they forget that those who read their advertisings and see their commercials are future users who may be lost in all these options and that difficult language just make it worst.

But of course, it is not an impossible task and that, undeniably and without question, we all need insurances, especially health insurance because at one point in our lives, we all get sick. All we need is to look closely and carefully to what they have to offer. Please also take into consideration some these important things in choosing a health insurance: on what they cover and what are the exceptions, the agents who assist us, and also health insurance rates because an expensive insurance does not necessarily the best one. You must gather as many information as possible, websites are particularly an easy choice.

For those who are addicted to various drugs, usually drug detox program is the only way to help them overcome their drug addiction. Whether they are addicted to street drugs or have a prescription drug addiction, their recovery needs to begin in a drug detox program to minimize any drug withdrawal symptoms. If you are looking for a safe and effective drug detox program then you need to find a drug detox program that meets the needs of your drug detox issues. Some people when looking for a drug detox program may require more assistance in the medical area and some in the psychiatric area.

Drug Detox Philosophies

There are as many drug detox philosophies as there are drug detox programs. Take you time and look for drug detox programs that are located within a drug rehab program and are medically based. By medically based we are referring to a drug detox program that is located within a drug rehab and has 24 hour nursing, 24 hour drug rehab staff and a physician trained in addiction medicine.

Drug Detox Objectives

Two of the main objectives of a drug detox program is to manage and drug withdrawal symptoms and to evaluate the patient for their need of ongoing drug rehab. By having the drug detox program located within the drug rehab, you can see how that provides for a seamless transition into drug rehab for the person in need of these services. It is well documented that people that attend drug detox and do not take advantage of ongoing drug rehab usually experience a relapse.

Datura, more commonly know as Jimson Weed, Moon Flower or Loco Weed, is native to much of the United States, Mexico and South America. The main ingredients in Datura are belladonna alkaloids, atropine and scopolamine. It is most often used by young people who are unaware of its reputation and side effects.

Datura is used by Indians in South America and Mexico as part of their tribal ceremonies. However, the dosages used are so precise and diluted that the risk is greatly reduced

All parts of the plant are toxic. The physical effects are a dry mouth, high temperature with reduced sweating and blurred vision. The so-called pleasant effects or psychological effects are confusion, euphoria and delirium. The state into which someone goes after ingesting Datura has also been called the “waking dream”. Some say it is like having one foot in the living and one foot with the dead. Effects can last for days, and people have been found wandering without knowing where they are or how they got there.

Higher doses lead to poisoning. Symptoms include rapid heartbeat, incoherency and reddish, flushed skin. In extreme cases, seizures, hallucinations and cardiac arrest can also occur. An overdose should be considered potentially fatal and medical help should be sought. However, most deaths from the use of Datura are attributed to the dangerous behavior brought about by the drug. Extreme violence is often exhibited and the user has strength that is way beyond what they are normally capable of.

Because of the unpleasant nature of the “trip”, Datura is usually a one-time experience for most. However, because of the easy availability, it does become a substitute for other drugs such as heroin and cocaine when the drug of choice is not available.

Treatment for Datura addiction like any other drug addiction first requires that the user want the help and is willing to accept help from professionals that can guide them through the healing process.

As I have mentioned in several of previous articles, addiction to opiates is chronic disease of the brain and should be managed as such. It is usually the result of a combination of by genetic, psychosocial and environmental factors that ultimately lead to the development of this relapsing disease. Now that we agree that it is a disease shouldn’t we treat it as such?

Unfortunately, although many of the professionals working in the addiction field agree with this fact they still adopt of the mind set of our great grandfathers who looked down on those patients and considered addiction as an immoral sin and that addicts should repent. Some of the drug treatment programs are resistant to prescribing medications indicated for addiction treatment, rather, they place those patients in what looks like a lock down atmosphere and strip them of their ability to make decisions or communicate with certain people. While this approach may be needed in some cases to avoid external influences on patients as the facility implement their treatment protocols, it should not be generalized. Moreover, patients would be more receptive to the counseling efforts implemented in those facilities if they were comfortable and not suffering from the sever pains and aches associated with withdrawals from opiates.

What do you think will happen once those patients are released back into the society where all the triggers associated with addiction reside?

Also have you ever seen a diabetic who is not very compliant with their doctor’s recommendations placed in a diabetic rehab?

Treatment should be individualized and as recovery moves forward patients should gradually be empowered to take control of their life in order to eventually become productive members of the society.

In contrast, the outpatient programs using Buprenorphine, implement an approach which deals with addiction as a chronic relapsing disease that needs medical treatment in the form of medications in addition to psychosocial rehabilitation. While being on Buprenorphine, patients are relieved from the dreadful symptoms of withdrawals and cravings. This helps patients develop the interest and passion to participate in their rehabilitation process and makes the education efforts on our parts much easier.

The stigma imposed by our society on patient suffering from addiction has a profound negative impact on the recovery process. We hope that through education, research and solid evidence the medical community would be able to change the views and beliefs of the society and some of the professionals in order to provide the best treatment approach to our patients.

When it comes to addictive drugs that are often abused, cocaine leads the way as one of the most powerful illegal substances on the street. Many who have dabbled in the use of cocaine (even if only for one time), the chances of becoming hooked are quite high. One can never truly control their body’s need for the drug once it has undergone an experience. Numerous individuals will continue to use cocaine, eventually developing an addiction that wreaks havoc on their social and personal lives, as well as job performance, emotions, and health.

Cocaine is often sniffed, snorted, injected, or smoked (which involves the use of crack cocaine or free-base). Snorting cocaine powder through the nose allows the drug to enter the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. The use of a needle releases the drug straight into the bloodstream, while smoking sends cocaine vapors into the bloodstream through the lungs. Injecting and smoking quickly intensifies the effects of cocaine because it makes contact with the bloodstream faster than other methods of use.

Effects of Cocaine Abuse

Cocaine users often suffer from the effects of the drug throughout their central nervous system. Peripheral blood vessels become constricted, pupils dilate, and an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature may arise. Some users may succumb to periods of anxiety, irritability, and restlessness. In the worst cases, cocaine users may experience sudden death at first use, but at any time, the threat of unexpected death may occur. High doses of cocaine or constant use may also lead to paranoia, aggressive tendencies, nasal damage (when snorting), seizures, or cardiac arrest.

Getting Help for Cocaine Addiction

Since cocaine use is a dire problem in today’s society, there are many different resources that help people overcome their addiction. A wide range of treatment programs and opportunities are available for cocaine addicts, including both inpatient and outpatient techniques. Self-help groups are a popular way that cocaine addicts cope with leaving their drug of choice behind.

Many of these associations work from a 10- or 12-step model that aims to prevent a relapse, as well as help individuals stay on track. Medication, counseling, and additional meetings also help break the cycle of drug addiction. To find a self-help group, a wealth of outlets can guide one in the right direction, such as doctors, counselors, the phone book, library, and across the Internet.

Mescaline is an illegal hallucinogen that can be found naturally in certain cacti species, including the peyote cactus and the San Pedro cactus. The top of the cactus is cut close to the ground and then dried. The small button like crowns of the plant can be eaten or soaked in water, but, because of the unpleasant, bitter taste, mescaline is most often ground into a fine powder and placed into capsules for easier consumption. Mescaline can also be produced synthetically and is often used to make psychedelic tea.

Mescaline users typically ingest four to twenty buttons, or capsules, per dose. The average effective dosage is 500 mg, but hallucinations can begin after 300 mg. A typical high can last up to twelve hours. Mescaline is, however, much less potent than similar hallucinogens, like LSD and psilocybin. This drug is popular because of the altered, dreamy state of consciousness it produces, along with visual and audible hallucinations, often said to be enlightening and enjoyable.

Besides intense hallucinations, mescaline users may also experience a number of other side effects. Uncontainable laughter and dreamy visions with the eyes both open and closed are common, as well as new and unusual thinking processes. Euphoric and psychedelic states are also experienced under the influence of mescaline. Users usually have dilated pupils while on the drug, and may feel hot and cold sensations.

Mescaline can also cause users to become irrational in their thinking or the user may experience feelings of anxiety and waves of hatred. Headaches, dizziness, and nausea are common side effects as well. Mescaline use can also accelerate the users heart rate, sometimes to an unhealthy level that could be fatal. Large doses of mescaline can lower the body’s glucose level, possibly causing unconsciousness, or can induce convulsions, heart failure, and death due to respiratory failure.

Although mescaline does not create a physical dependency in users, the drug can be moderately addictive because of the possibility of psychological dependency. There are a number of organizations available to help those who have problems with mescaline addiction, as well as other drugs. These organizations understand the problems caused by both physical and psychological substance dependencies, and treat the addiction accordingly.

As a type of anesthetic, which is used on animals, and in some cases on humans, many people may not realize that this is a drug that is often abused, especially by people who are already involved in the drug scene. Like most other abused drugs, it can be very dangerous if used in the wrong way and people need to understand how dangerous Ketamine addiction can be.

About Ketamine

Ketamine is used very often by veterinarians as an anesthetic or tranquilizer for animals, and it is considered to be a hallucinogen. This drug usually comes as a powder; however, there is now a liquid form of this drug as well. While it is usually not used on its’ own, it is often used in combination with other drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and even tobacco. On the street, this drug is usually referred to as either “Special K,” or “Vitamin K.”

Effects of Ketamine Abuse

If people choose to abuse Ketamine, there are a variety of negative effects that can occur. It can cause hallucinations and a variety of other negative effects as well, including mental problems, delirium, bad motor functions, amnesia, and in some cases it can cause extreme respiratory problems that can lead to death. Another effect that can occur is called a K-hole, which is very similar to a near death experience, where the person almost seems to leave the body.

Getting Help with Ketamine Addiction

Ketamine addiction is nothing to mess around with, since in the end it can actually kill you. If you have an addiction to this drug, it is imperative that you get help immediately. There are a variety of programs and institutions that can help you to deal with your addiction. There is no need to go on with an addiction that is ruining your life when you can find help. Great programs are available, even for free, where you can find the help you need to overcome your addiction to Ketamine.

Hydrocodone is an opioid or a narcotic that can elicit a euphoric, calm state that is very similar to the effects that morphine or heroin gives. It is thus very beneficial to those who suffer from chronic and long lasting pain. However, despite these obvious benefits, evidence points towards the direction of chronic addiction. Pure hydrocodone belongs to the Schedule II drug category, which simply means that it is controlled and use of the drug is highly restricted. However, there are only a few prescription drugs that are made of pure hydrocodone. Most of them available in the market contain only small amounts of hydrocodone mixed with non-narcotic ingredients, such as in Vicodin and Lortab. When so, they are classified to be under the Schedule III categories with expectedly fewer restrictions on distribution and use.

There are more than 200 pain killers marketed today that contain hydrocodone – Vicodin, Hycodan, Norco, Lorcet, Lortab, Hydroco, Vicoprofen and Xodol, among many others. They can vary from tablet, capsule to syrup in form. Common side effects of taking drugs with hydrocodone include light-headedness, nausea, drowsiness, vomiting, constipation and euphoria. Other less common side effects include mood changes, blood disorders, anxiety, lethargy, repressed or irregular respiration, rashes and difficulty urinating. Taking alcohol with hydrocodone can intensify drowsiness to a greater extent, and may even lead to toxic overdose.

Depending on the individual, many experts believe that addiction can occur from two to four weeks upon taking the drug at higher doses. It is habit-forming, and can consequently lead to physiological addiction with continued use.

Drug abuse and addiction occur when a person uses any form of drug for a purpose or way other than for which it was intended. Drug abuse is most commonly associated with the use of illegal street drugs. However, drug addiction often times takes place with over-the-counter (OTC) medications and prescription (Rx) drugs as well.

Illegal drugs such as cocaine, crack-cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana are the most frequently thought of abused drugs; other drugs, such as alcohol, although legal, are also drugs that are frequently and severely abused. Illegal drugs and alcohol are no longer the overwhelming majority of drugs abused by teenagers, prescription and over-the-counter drugs are quickly becoming the high of choice.

In addition to street drugs many people frequently abuse over-the-counter medications. Teenagers many times use cough syrups as a cheap and legal high, however the dangers of such highs are often severely underestimated. Many people have found themselves innocently but uncontrollably addicted to antihistamines (OTC and Rx), for their drowsy sleep inducing effects. The common misconception with OTC drugs is that they are safe, and that overuse and abuse will not have any serious consequences.

There are also those people who abuse prescription drugs that are often meant to help people for particular medical conditions, drugs such as Oxycontin or Adderall. In this case, the drug addict does not actually need the drug for its intended purpose. Instead, the abuser chooses to use it in order to get high. Many times abusers will go through great lengths to obtain these drugs, resorting to theft and fraud, including theft of medications from family or friends, the writing of counterfeit prescriptions, or robbery of retail pharmacies. All of these actions have serious legal implications for those who are involved.

It’s important to remember that frequent and uncontrollable use of any drug, whether it ‘s an over-the-counter, prescription, or street drug, is an addiction. It is imperative that, upon identification of abuse and addiction, help is sought as soon as possible. By seeking help, as soon as possible, the damage to the individual, family, and friends, can be effectively limited. Through treatment those who suffer from addiction can return to a normal and healthy lifestyle.

Just like politics, bodybuilding activity is not exclusive to men. More and more women are interested in jumping into this field because for them, perfect physique is something that is not only for men, but also for them. In order to attain perfect physique, women, just like men, have to carry out rigorous physical exercises and extensive diet program. They also need to take bodybuilding supplements that help they perform their exercise and diet program effectively and productively. Of course the supplements that women should take are a little bit different from those that male bodybuilders often take. However, the types of those supplements remain the same with those for men. If men require fat burners and muscle enhancers to support their bodybuilding routines, women also need the same types of supplements with ones taken by men.

Bodybuilding supplements for women are now available in many bodybuilding stores, either local or online. Therefore, women who want to attain perfect physique should not find difficulty when they need beneficial substances that can help them improve their muscle and lose their weight. By searching for those stores using search engine, they can find those stores in seconds because most bodybuilding stores have a website that showcases their products. If they don’t want to be hassled by this quest, they can go directly to fem.com to observe a large assortment of women’s fat burners and muscle enhancers and choose ones which they consider the right for them.

When they want to buy bodybuilding supplements from any bodybuilding stores, there are several important things that they have to scrutinize. Firstly, they have to make sure that the store from which they buy the supplements is rated favorably by the BBB because its rating determines the store’s reputability. Secondly, because supplements may cause side effects, they have to understand how to take those supplements properly so that the side effects of those supplements can be avoided.

If you are in recovery you have no doubt heard the saying “walking around in a pink cloud.” Unbeknown to myself I was one of those pink cloud walkers. I say was because the bottom just dropped out of my pink cloud and I now find myself immersed in gray.

In the beginning of my addiction recovery I was experiencing everything in my life for what felt like the first time. I had spent so many years of my life walking around in a drug induced fog that I had missed out on well, living. To be sober and have sober thoughts and feelings seemed so rewarding in itself that surely life was going to be great from here on in.

I was under the impression that once I stopped using drugs all of the behaviors and character flaws that I possess would simply melt away. They had to right? It couldn’t be me as a person that was so messed up, it had to be the result of my drug use.

I wasn’t prepared for the fact that I would actually have to work at becoming a better person. I guess it is my addictive thinking brain that wanted all the rewards of a clean and sober life without having to actually work for them. Instant gratification is what I’m used to getting, it’s what I want and what I have sadly realized is not going to happen.

So I find myself in the gray. I guess this is where the real work begins. The gray is where I have to take a very honest look at myself and see what needs to be done in order to become the person that I ultimately want to be. They gray is where I will no doubt feel pain and fear when dealing with situations that I have allowed myself to run from in the past. The gray is not about gratification or having the feeling of elation, it is about building the foundation on which I will rest my life.

What allows me to sleep in comfort at night is knowing that just as the pink cloud portion of my recovery passed…this too shall pass. Once I have put in the effort and the time needed to improve myself I will be left with the results. Although not instant, I will once again have gratification.

Erin Savage is a mother, a wife and a recovering drug addict. Sharing her stories is a big part of her recovery. She is hoping that while helping herself through her writing she will also be providing help and hope to others. She is living by the motto “You only get to keep what you give away”.

Opioids should never be taken when drinking alcohol (also a drug) or when alcohol may still be in the system. Many chronic pain patients may be under-treated as a result of doctors who are trying to gain control over pain killer addiction, they report. Opioids used as the doctor has prescribed are supposedly not dangerous according to some well-established medical groups; but if this is the case, why are so many people addicted to them?

Often people who are addicted to pain killers are plagued with various symptoms to different degrees; many times they don’t associate the symptoms with the drug. Treatment options for pain killer addiction include: medications, such as methadone and LAAM (levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol), and behavioral counseling; usually, the patient is medically detoxified before any treatment approach is begun. If you are addicted to pain killers or other drugs or think you may be, you can start working to increase the body’s endorphin production naturally; some ways are laughing, touching, massage, acupuncture, acupressure, walking, anything that makes you feel good that’s natural.

2.2 million people aged 12 and up first abused painkillers within the past year; this is more than the number of people who started using marijuana and has overtaken the use of cocaine. More than 415,000 people received treatment for pain killer abuse or addiction this past year. Addiction to pain killers is an escalating problem today, especially the abuse of opioid pain killers.

When you’re addicted physically to a drug, like pain killers or alcohol, etc., it’s because you’ve suppressed or shut down your body’s production of endorphins, which are natural opiate pain killers; when this happens you start craving the drug that you replaced the endorphins with whether it’s alcohol, any of a number of drugs or pain killers. A person exhibits compulsive behavior to satisfy their craving for a pain killer or pain medication even when there are negative consequences associated with taking the pain killer or drug. Addiction is both a biological and psychological condition.

There are many side effects and adverse reactions that can occur with the use of opioids as pain killers. There are a number of effective treatment options to treat pain killer addiction to prescription opioids and to help manage the sometimes severe withdrawal symptoms that can accompany sudden stopping of pain killers or drugs. More than 10% of high school seniors have started taking Vicodin for reasons other than reducing pain.

The longer you wait to get treatment the worse it’ll get; take action now. If you don’t have insurance, check with your local mental health agencies to see what is available that’s free. Find out from your local health professionals where the closest and best pain killer addiction treatment centers are.

All other demands of children, a job, school, or any other responsibilities may make inpatient treatment seem like an intrusion but it’s not. If you can’t do an in-patient rehab, find out how you can do outpatient rehab and pay for it under your insurance plan; check your insurance policy to see if it’s covered. It’s important to go through rehab following your detox stay: make it a part of your plan of action.

We did everything the experts told us to do. We did what we thought was right. But lurking around every corner was the Monster. The Monster was waiting to pounce on us and steal our dreams and destroy our future. He did. Bigtime!

You may know the Monster by another name – Drugs! Whatever name you give him, he’s an unforgiving and unrelenting monster who, according to the DEA, claims the lives of one American every 20 minutes.

When our son died, I could not bring myself to utter the words – “he died from a multidrug overdose.” I could merely say his heart stopped. He was a 31-year-old Paramedic and RN. The dregs of society? No. He was a young man with promise, talent, intelligence, good looks, kindness and every loving attribute you can describe.

Some kids do drugs to feel good or their peers entice them to do so but a lot of kids start taking drugs to self-medicate their emotional pain.

We can no longer remain silent about drug addiction. For far too long we’ve sat back and let the experts speak for us. Now we must speak.

We must not only get a firm handle on drug addiction but we must do all that we can to help the mentally ill. Mental illness and drug addiction quite often go hand in hand.

Three and four week rehabs are not the answer.

Jail time is not the answer. Unless an addicted person has committed a crime while under the influence of drugs (the fact that even doing drugs is a crime, notwithstanding) they don’t need to be sequestered in jail with hardened criminals. They need treatment, not punishment.

Although ridiculed, Nancy Reagan was spot on with her “Just Say No” message. But that won’t work in and of itself. We must attack this with as much vigor as the anti-tobacco campaign. Until science discovers a cure for addiction, the only remedy truly is prevention. “Be smart – Don’t start.”

We have to start early on talking to our kids about drugs, showing them the horrific consequences of drug abuse. Let them see the drug addicts in hospitals and nursing homes who are alive but not really living.

The use of heroin is becoming an increasingly serious problem that is affecting many across the United States. The drug possesses highly addicting characteristics that come from injecting, snorting, or smoking the illegal substance. A common misconception associated with heroin is that snorting or smoking the drug holds less of a chance of becoming addicted. Heroin comes from morphine, which is extracted from the seedpod of a poppy plant. The white or brown powder, which has evolved over time, is sometimes referred to by many different street names, such as “junk,” “smack,” or “H.”

Effects of Heroin Abuse

When it comes to heroin abuse, users encounter both short-term and long-term effects associated with the drug. After a single dose, short-term effects appear soon after and fade within a few hours. After repeated use of heroin, long-term effects begin to settle in, where an individual may suffer from collapsed veins, a heart infection, liver disease, and cellulitis. A user may also develop poor health and a weakened immune system, which could lead to a variety of complications. A fatal overdose may occur, as well as contracting an array of diseases, such as HIV/AIDS from infected needles, and hepatitis. Depending on the kind of heroin used, blood vessels may become clogged, infections arise, or pulmonary reactions surface.

Getting Help for Heroin Addiction

Since serious withdrawal symptoms are associated with stopping the use of heroin, many users are reluctant to face these difficulties. A doctor may prescribe a synthetic opiate, such as methadone, to lessen the craving for the drug, as well as help with some of the withdrawal symptoms. A wide range of treatments are used to help individuals overcome their heroin addiction, including other forms of medication and therapy that taps into behavioral responses that explores the personal dependency or longing for the drug.

An array of support systems also adds to the success rate of recovering heroin addicts. The first step towards getting assistance for a heroin addiction is to ask for or accept help. One can turn to a family member, friend, doctor, or priest, who can then lead the way to the multitude of available services, including both inpatient and outpatient treatment options.
